WEST HAVEN, Connecticut (PIX11) – A Queens man allegedly tried to drown his own children in West Haven, Connecticut, on Saturday, police said.

According to West Haven police, it happened around 2:30 a.m. in the area of Ocean and Dawson avenues. An officer saw a Nissan SUV parked on the beach and as he approached the car, he could hear screams coming from the water, authorities said.

Police said he saw a man, identified as Romney Desronvil, and two small children in the water. The officer entered the water and Desronvil was reportedly swept further away from him, authorities said.

Police say Desronvil yelled at the officer to “stay back.” Authorities said additional officers and the West Shore Fire Department then arrived at the scene.

The officer who arrived at the scene first was able to grab the two children and bring them to shore. The other officers helped to carry out life-saving measures on the children, according to police.

New Haven police helped West Haven police transport the children to a local hospital. Authorities said both have been in intensive care since Sunday.

Desronvil, 41, of Queens, is in West Haven police custody and charges are pending.
