Deadly fire in Georgetown, woman dead – NBC Boston

A woman died in a fire in Georgetown, Massachusetts on Saturday evening.

The Georgetown Fire Chief said 20-foot-high flames were blazing through the roof of the single-family home when firefighters arrived just before 11 p.m.

When the fire broke out, four people were in the house on East Main Street. Three of them were able to escape the house safely.

Firefighters had to rescue a woman who suffered serious injuries and was trapped on the second floor.

The woman was taken to Anna Jacques Hospital in Newburyport, where she was later pronounced dead.

“After the rescue was made, we pulled the crews out and went on the defensive and continued to fight the fire that way,” said Fire Chief Brian Coolidge. “There were actually some collapses in the building. It’s not worth risking our firefighters on more collapses.”

Firefighters from more than a dozen surrounding towns were called to help fight the rapidly spreading fire and were finally able to bring it under control shortly before 1 a.m. Sunday.

East Main Street is still closed in both directions from Tenney Street to True Lane.

The house was declared a total loss. The cause of the fire is being investigated.
