CID takes over sexual abuse case involving JD(S) MLC Suraj Revanna | Bengaluru News

NEW DELHI: A case of alleged sexual abuse against JD(S) MP Suraj Revanna has been handed over to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) for further investigation, Karnataka Home Minister G Parameshwara said. The incident involves allegations made by a party worker which led to Revanna’s arrest on charges including “unnatural offences”.

Suraj Revanna, brother of former MP Prajwal Revanna, who is himself facing sexual misconduct allegations, was taken into custody in Hassan on charges of molesting a male party worker. He has been booked under several sections of the IPC, including “unnatural offences”.

“The case registered at Holenarasipura police station in Hassan district under sections 377, 342, 506 and 34 IPC is transferred to the CID for further investigation with immediate effect. The case file should be transferred to the CID immediately for further investigation,” said an official communication from the office of the Director General and Inspector General of Police to the Director General of CID and the Superintendent of Police, Hassan.

The order asked the Police Commissioner of Hassan District to send the case file and hand it over personally to the investigating officer of the CID.

The Director General of Police, CID (Special Forces and Economic Offences), based in Bengaluru, has been asked to conduct further investigation and submit a detailed report after completion of the case.

Speaking to reporters, Home Minister Parameshwara said: “Following the complaint, the police filed an FIR, arrested Suraj Revanna and the investigation is ongoing.”

He continued: “The case will be referred to the Criminal Investigation Department. A number of similar cases have been referred to the Criminal Investigation Department; this one too will be referred to the Criminal Investigation Department.”

Regarding Suraj Revanna’s own complaint, he said: “All necessary action will be taken.”

Suraj Revanna has alleged a conspiracy against his family. Parameshwara said, “The complaint has been received. All necessary action will be taken as per law. Apart from that, I am not aware of any political conspiracy that he has alleged.”

Suraj was interrogated all night at the Cyber Economic and Narcotics (CEN) police station in Hassan before being arrested. He was later taken to the Hassan Institute of Medical Sciences (HIMS) for a medical examination.

The case arose when a 27-year-old man filed a complaint alleging that Suraj Revanna, the eldest son of Holenarasipura MP HD Revanna, sexually assaulted him at his farm in Ghannikada on June 16. The Holenarasipura police then registered a complaint against the JD(S) MP under sections 377 (unnatural offences), 342 (wrongful deprivation of liberty) and 506 (criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) late on Saturday night.

However, Suraj Revanna, grandson of former Prime Minister HD Deve Gowda and nephew of Union Minister HD Kumaraswamy, categorically denied the allegations. He claimed that the man had filed a false complaint to extort Rs 50 crore from him.

On Friday, the police registered a case of extortion against the JD(S) worker after Suraj Revanna’s close aide Shivakumar filed a complaint. Shivakumar alleged that the party worker tried to extort money by threatening to file a false sexual assault complaint against Suraj. It was alleged that the man initially demanded Rs 5 crore, the amount was later reduced to Rs 2 crore.

Suraj’s brother, former Hassan MP Prajwal Revanna, is currently in police custody for allegedly sexually harassing several women. He was arrested last month after returning from Germany. Prajwal, who lost his Hassan seat in the Lok Sabha, was arrested on May 31 after returning from Germany, where he had been staying due to rape and intimidation charges against him.

Her parents, HD Revanna and Bhavani, are out on bail on charges of kidnapping and holding an alleged victim of sexual harassment by Prajwal.
