Navi Mumbai sub-inspector arrested for raping subordinate

The sub-inspector of Navi Mumbai is said to have stalked the woman and threatened to kill her if she did not leave her husband.

A 32-year-old sub-inspector of Navi Mumbai police has been booked for raping and molesting a married policewoman in the city, an official said on Sunday.

The alleged offences took place in Sanpada area between 2020 and July 2022. The accused, a colleague of the 26-year-old woman, promised to marry her and reportedly raped her several times in a flat in Sanpada. He also collected Rs 1.9 million from her on various pretexts and returned only Rs 1.461 million, PTI reported.

According to the news agency’s report, the Navi Mumbai sub-inspector allegedly stalked the woman and threatened to kill her if she did not leave her husband. The original complaint was filed at Pant Nagar police station in Mumbai, which resulted in a ‘zero’ charge against the accused under various sections of the Indian Penal Code, including 376 (rape), 376(2)(n) (repeated rape), 354(a) (sexual harassment), 354(d) (stalking), 506(2) (criminal intimidation) and 420 (infidelity).

The case has now been referred to the Sanpada police for further investigation, the PTI report said.

Meanwhile, another PTI report said the Navi Mumbai police in Maharashtra arrested a 31-year-old man for allegedly befriending a woman through a marriage-matching website and raping her.

According to PTI, the accused, a resident of Dombivli in Thane district, broke off relations with the 30-year-old complainant after assaulting her on the pretext of marriage, the official said, citing the FIR.

According to authorities, the suspect, Shadab Munaf Ansari, and the woman from Mumbra met several years ago, the report added.

The man promised to marry her and then raped her in a hut in Panvel, Navi Mumbai and a hotel in Dombivli, the woman claimed, according to the agency report.

According to the source, the woman approached the police when Ansari allegedly failed to keep his promise.

The Panvel police in Navi Mumbai on Wednesday filed a rape charge against Ansari under the Indian Penal Code and launched an investigation, a PTI report said.
