Woman arrested after vehicle accident in building

Morgan Tiara Smith, 25, of Morganton was arrested today (June 23) by Morganton Public Safety officers. She is charged with possession of Schedule II narcotics, possession of Schedule VI narcotics, possession of drug paraphernalia, driving under the influence, careless and reckless driving, and failure to maintain lane.

At approximately 12:15 a.m., officers from the Morganton Department of Public Safety were called to a one-vehicle accident with injuries at 1301 East Union Street. Upon arrival, they found a heavily damaged vehicle that had collided with a building at that address.

Emergency responders extricated the driver from the vehicle and transported her to a nearby medical facility. She was identified as Morgan Tiara Smith. After further investigation, Smith was charged with the aforementioned offenses.

City officials arrived at the scene and declared the building inaccessible. Speed ​​and drug abuse were suspected as possible factors in the accident. Smith was not listed as an inmate in Burke County. Her first court appearance is scheduled for September 20.
