The 7 best “Walking Dead” spin-offs in the ranking

Since its debut in 2010, The Walking Dead has become such a popular franchise that it has made me one of its biggest fans. It immediately captivated audiences with its intense action, realistic characters and post-apocalyptic world filled with savage zombies (the correct term is walker in the show).

The success of this series grew with a universe of spinoffs, each expanding the lore and exploring new locations in this dystopian world. From prequels depicting the beginning of the apocalypse to individual character stories, these spinoffs have forged their own paths while staying true to the spirit of the original series.

So which spin-offs should you really pay attention to? We’re ranking the seven best Walking Dead spin-offs based on their storytelling, character development, and overall impact on the franchise.

7. “Flight 462”

“Flight 462” is a web series and a spinoff of the popular TV show “Fear the Walking Dead,” which itself is a companion series to “The Walking Dead.” This mini-spinoff consists of sixteen webisodes, each about a minute long.

The story of Flight 462 takes place on a commercial airliner during the early stages of the zombie outbreak. As the infection begins to spread, passengers and crew must cope with the horrifying realization that the undead are among them. The narrative focuses on the chaos and fear that ensues as the characters try to survive the flight.

The series was actually well received for its gripping storytelling and effective use of the webisode format to deliver a compact, exciting narrative. However, this series ranks lowest on our list because the acting isn’t great and it’s a spin-off that could easily be forgotten.

6. “The Walking Dead: World Beyond”

“World Beyond” expands the universe of “The Walking Dead” to include a new generation of survivors. It follows a group of first-generation teenagers coming of age in the apocalypse, specifically sisters Iris (Aliyah Royale) and Hope Bennett (Alexa Mansour) and their friends Elton (Nicolas Cantu) and Silas (Hal Cumpston), who leave the safety of their community to embark on a dangerous cross-country journey. Their mission is to find Hope and Iris’ father, a scientist working on a possible cure for the zombie virus.

Unlike the other spinoffs in the series, World Beyond presents the apocalypse from the perspective of younger characters who have grown up with this world. And it’s a very exciting narrative considering that we’ve only seen adults navigate the apocalypse so far.

However, the acting is not convincing enough to place the film higher on our list. There are also some meaningless episodes that contain too much dialogue instead of brutal zombie action.

5. “Tales of the Walking Dead”

This is where we come to some really exciting spinoffs, one of which is Tales of the Walking Dead, as it is something different as an anthology series. It offers a fresh perspective by exploring new stories and characters in the same apocalyptic world.

Each episode explores different aspects of life during the zombie apocalypse and introduces new characters and their problems. However, familiar characters from the larger Walking Dead universe are occasionally featured to provide backstory or fill in narrative gaps that didn’t fit the main series. The episode can be watched without having seen The Walking Dead, making it the perfect standalone spinoff.

Brad Newsome of the Sydney Morning Herald put it this way: “There’s still life in the old zombies! This anthology series brings many new faces and interesting individual stories to the familiar dystopia of The Walking Dead.”

4. “The Walking Dead: Dead City”

One of my absolute favorites is Dead City, if only because of the Resident Evil vibe it exudes. The spinoff follows beloved characters Maggie (Lauren Cohan) and Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) as they venture into post-apocalyptic Manhattan, which has long been cut off from the mainland.

At its core is the uneasy alliance between Maggie and Negan, as they must work together to survive despite their past conflicts (if you’ve seen the main series, you know why). The series does a great job of exploring their relationship as they navigate the dangers of a city full of walkers and unfriendly human factions.

If you’re a fan of the franchise who has stuck with the series over the years until the end (like me), then you’ll definitely enjoy this trip to New York. It’s a fun series where two enemies are thrown into the same room and the door is locked.

3. “The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon”

Sneaking into the top three is this highly rated spin-off series, which centers around the incredibly popular character Daryl Dixon (Norman Reedus). It follows his journey after the main show, as he somehow finds himself in France. When he meets Isabelle (Clémence Poésy), she tasks him with the mission of safely transporting a young boy named Laurent (Louis Puech Scigliuzzi) in exchange for her help.

Separated from his familiar surroundings in the United States, Daryl must navigate this new and unfamiliar terrain, facing unique challenges and meeting new characters along the way. This spin-off offers fans the chance to see Daryl in a different light as he faces new species of walker variants and humans who threaten his new friends.

I have to say, I really enjoyed this spin-off. Daniel Fienberg of the Hollywood Reporter said it “breathes new life into the franchise,” and I couldn’t agree more. Seeing the apocalypse in a completely different place is also refreshing, as we’ve always focused on the United States. Therefore, it deserves its place as the third best spin-off on our list.

2. “The Walking Dead: The Living”

Now we come to two of the best spinoffs of this franchise ever. The Ones Who Live continues the story of Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln) and Michonne (Danai Gurira), two of the most iconic characters from The Walking Dead universe.

After a long separation, the series explores their efforts to find each other again and face the challenges of the post-apocalyptic world together. You’ll learn more about their individual experiences during their separation and how those experiences changed them. You’ll also get insight into what happened to Rick after he was kidnapped by the CRM (Civic Republic Military), a mysterious organization that plays a significant role in the larger Walking Dead story.

What makes this spin-off so damn good is the chemistry between Rick and Michonne. Their devotion to each other gives the series such a special feel, as it’s essentially a love story in an apocalypse. The Ones Who Live manages to be sad, scary, and satisfying all at the same time.

1. “Fear the walking dead”

The trophy for best spin-off goes to Fear the Walking Dead, a prequel series that explores the beginning of the zombie apocalypse from the perspective of a blended family in Los Angeles. The series begins shortly before the events of The Walking Dead and provides insight into the collapse of society with the outbreak of the zombie apocalypse.

Of course, we also see the characters struggling to survive and adapt as they encounter the rapidly spreading undead and other desperate survivors. It’s exactly what you would expect in real life.

I put this spin-off first because it was interesting to see how the world completely changed in a matter of days, and it was terrifying to watch. The Clark family, consisting of Madison (Kim Dickens), Travis (Cliff Curtis), Nick (Frank Dillane), and Alicia (Alycia Debnam-Carey), also makes this series exceptional by portraying realistic people in a world that is falling apart.
