4 dead, 9 injured in shooting outside grocery store in Fordyce, Arkansas

State police say four people were killed and nine injured, including two police officers, when a gunman opened fire outside a grocery store in Fordyce, Arkansas, Friday morning.

Police responded to calls about a shooting at the Mad Butcher grocery store around 11:40 a.m. Friday, Arkansas State Police Director Mike Hagar said. The gunman was taken into custody after being shot in an exchange of fire with police, he said.

The shooting initially killed three people and injured 10, including the two police officers whose injuries were not life-threatening, police said. Others were seriously injured, Hagar added.

One of the injured died a day later on Saturday evening, bringing the death toll to four, according to police. Killed in the shooting were Shirley Taylor (62), Callie Weems (23), Roy Sturgis (50) and Ellen Shrum (81).

Officials said the shooter’s injuries were not life-threatening. A motive for the attack is still unknown.

Police identified the suspected shooter Friday as Travis Eugene Posey, 44, of New Edinburg, Arkansas, about 11 miles southeast of Fordyce.

He is accused of four counts of capital crimes, state police said in a statement. Further charges are pending.

Fordyce is located about 70 miles south of Little Rock and has a population of just over 3,700, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.

Nancy Brazil said she and her parents were on their way to do their weekly grocery shopping when they came under fire.

“My father got out of the car and heard gunshots. He went back inside, but the gunman started shooting at their car, he told me,” Brazil told the Washington Post.

Her father, Thomas Brazil Sr., 65, was grazed in the forehead by a bullet but was not seriously injured, Brazil said. Her 61-year-old mother, Sharon, was not physically injured, she said.

“It’s a blessing that they’re OK,” Brazil said, adding that her parents’ car was shot more than 20 times.

“Never in my life would I have thought that something like this would happen in this small town,” she said. “I mean, everyone knows everyone here. Things like this don’t happen here.”

Arkansas Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders thanked first responders in a social media post for their “quick and heroic actions to save lives.”

“My prayers are with the victims and all those affected by this horrific incident,” she wrote.
