NYPD investigates hate crimes in New York City

Democratic Rep. Jamaal Bowman led the crowd in lively ceasefire chants at a campaign rally in New York on Saturday, footage posted on social media shows, as he heads into Tuesday’s primary against a pro-Israel challenger.

Bowman held a rally in the South Bronx on Saturday alongside fellow left-wingers Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (New York) and Sen. Bernie Sanders (Vermont) to boost the controversial congressman ahead of his primary against George Latimer, the Democratic executive of Westchester County, New York. Although Bowman’s consistent opposition to Israel’s efforts to destroy Hamas in Gaza has become a central theme of the campaign, he nevertheless took the stage to call for a ceasefire, infuriating the crowd with obscenities.

“What am I supposed to do? You’re after me, you’re after my family, you’re after my children. I’m not supposed to fight back? I’m not supposed to fight back?” Bowman screamed into the microphone. “We’re going to show them who the hell we are!” Bowman screamed before waving his arms to cheer up the crowd and shouting again, “We’re going to show them who the hell we are!”

“I’m not supposed to fight back? We’re going to show them who the hell we are!” Rep. Bowman, along with Rep. AOC and Bernie Sanders, spoke at a rally in the Bronx as pro-Palestinian protesters chanted in an attempt to disrupt the rally.

Bowman also vigorously led the crowd in chanting his last name and “Ceasefire now,” a slogan adopted by activists demanding that Israel stop fighting Hamas in Gaza. During the “Ceasefire now” chants, Bowman picked up a stool that was on the stage, raised it in the air and slammed it against the stage.

β€œWe will not stand by in silence while US taxpayer dollars kill babies, women and children,” Bowman said at the rally.

With the primary election looming, Bowman – who raised fire alarms on Capitol Hill ahead of a crucial vote in September 2023 – is banking on the “star power” of Ocasio-Cortez and Sanders to get him across the finish line, according to the New York Times. The rally was held in St. Mary’s Park in the Bronx, which is outside Bowman’s 16th district.

Bowman’s stance on Israel has become one of the most important issues in the race against Latimer, who was 17 percentage points ahead of the incumbent as of June 11, according to Emerson Polling, while 21 percent of respondents were still undecided. Latimer has criticized Bowman’s rhetoric on the war between Israel and Hamas, pointing out that during the last debate between the two candidates, Bowman called for a ceasefire within about 72 hours of the October 7 Hamas attacks, according to the Jewish News Syndicate.

Bowman also claimed that reports of terrorist rapes on October 7 were “propaganda.” However, according to Politico, he retracted that statement after the United Nations confirmed that Hamas militants had indeed committed acts of sexual violence during the attack.

“It’s about the grace of our humanity, it’s about loving each other and loving our humanity. That’s what it’s about,” Bowman said on stage. “And that’s why we can’t allow (the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC)) or anyone else to take away our humanity.”

The Bowman campaign team did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
