A group of miscreants armed with bamboo sticks raided the office of Trinamul Congress municipal councillor Pintu Debnath on Saturday and damaged furniture and documents.

Mr. Debnath is the Councillor for Ward 1 of Rajpur-Sonarpur Municipality.

The city council was not in office at the time of the incident. According to local police, four people associated with the city council were injured.

A large police force from Narendrapur police station was immediately dispatched to the scene of the accident and rescued the injured.

The unrest began this afternoon when miscreants suddenly attacked Mr Debnath’s office at a taxi stand near Garia railway station and went on a rampage, beating up several persons who had come to meet the councillor to get his signature on various civic issues.

The entire office virtually turned into a battlefield, locals said.

Police are investigating the case and suspect that the incident may be a continuation of an old rivalry between the injured and the perpetrators.

Local sources in the Trinamul Congress said that the municipal councillor had failed to meet some illegal demands of the miscreants, following which they attacked his office and beat up some people close to him.
