Trans woman receives $35,000 after Ontario leg wax incident in which owner allegedly said he didn’t have to serve ‘someone like you’

A transgender woman was denied a leg wax at a Canadian salon after the owner allegedly said they had no one who could serve “someone like her.” A local court awarded a woman $35,000 in damages – but the establishment is fighting back.

The ruling against Mad Wax Windsor salon was “deeply flawed,” said Raymond Colautti, a lawyer for owner Jason Carruthers, who added that he had filed an appeal.

Carruthers told CBC News the decision was “unfair” and that he was “shocked as a small business owner at the amount awarded.”

The incident occurred in March 2018 after the transgender woman, identified only as AB, called the salon to make an appointment, claiming the owner was discriminatory.

She filed a human rights complaint and later testified that she once attempted suicide and became addicted to drugs, but it is unclear whether her self-destructive behavior was related to the Mad Wax incident.

“It helps to tell the story of the discrimination I experienced and the steps taken to exacerbate that discrimination and harassment against me,” AB said in a statement quoted by the CBC.

Neither Colautti nor the Human Rights Legal Support Centre, which represents AB, immediately responded to a message from The Post.

Mad Wax’s voicemail stated that the salon is closed until July 5th.
