Family honors 3-year-old killed in Buffalo shooting

BUFFALO, NY — Family and neighbors are honoring the life of 3-year-old Raymone Carter, who was shot and killed Friday night in Buffalo while playing outside with his 7-year-old sister.

Just a few weeks before Raymone was due to turn four, he tragically died while riding a tricycle with his sister.

“An incredible child who never hurt anyone, and this is very devastating,” said Martina Carter, Raymone’s oldest sister. “I never thought a 3-year-old baby playing outside at a graduation party could get caught in a backlash and get shot.”

Buffalo police said they went to the first block of Domedion Avenue shortly before 9:30 p.m. and found two children, Raymone and his sister, shot while playing outside together.

Police officers immediately tried to rescue the little boy by taking him to the ECMC in the back seat of a police car, but he later succumbed to his injuries and died in the hospital.

His 7-year-old sister was taken to Oishei Children’s Hospital by ambulance. She is still recovering as of Saturday but is expected to make a full physical recovery.

“I think we are all tired of communicating situations like this to the public,” said Mayor Byron Brown.

Two suspects were questioned but released.

Police Commissioner Joseph Gramaglia said it was not a targeted attack.

“They were definitely not the target. The shooter’s motives, whether it was another target or firing shots into the crowd, were not the target.”

Family members provided 7 News with several photos of Ramone.

Meanwhile, Martina shared that she and her family cannot find the words to explain what it is like to lose a loved one at such a young age to senseless gun violence.

“I don’t understand it,” said Martina. “It hurt me a lot.”

Her family’s pain is felt throughout the region, with dozens of people coming to their home to support them and hold a vigil in Raymone’s honor.

“I’m so tired of being tired,” said Monica Webster of Mothers Against Violence. “Our babies are dying.”

“I have a three-year-old and I can’t imagine what they are going through,” said Darryl Scott Jr. of NYS SNUG.

“We have to do things differently,” said Victoria Ross. “We have to help this community.”

They hope this message will be heard not only in the neighborhood, but throughout Western New York State.

“Put down your guns. They’re killing our babies,” Webster said.
