Authorities identify UC Santa Barbara student found dead in dorm on graduation weekend

Adam Paul Gromotsky, 22, pronounced dead of unknown causes on June 15 in San Joaquin Villages

San Joaquin Villages is UCSB’s newest apartment complex for third- and fourth-year students.

Adam Paul Gromotsky, a 22-year-old UC Santa Barbara student from Dana Point, was found dead on June 15 near San Joaquin Villages, UCSB’s Goleta dormitory for third- and fourth-year students, according to a statement from the Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office.

According to UCSB spokeswoman Kiki Reyes, emergency responders arrived at the dorm last Saturday because an “unconscious student” had been called. University reports confirm that Gromostky was pronounced dead despite the efforts of medical personnel on the scene. Reyes said that while the university could not provide details “for privacy reasons,” no foul play appears to have occurred.

“Our deepest condolences go out to the family and friends of the student who passed away on campus last week,” Reyes said. “We recognize the impact and stress as we process this tragedy.”

Witnesses on social media claim that Gromotsky’s death on graduation weekend may have been the result of a fall from a nearby building, but these statements are unconfirmed.

The Santa Barbara Sheriff’s Office is currently conducting a thorough investigation into the cause of Gromotsky’s death. A toxicology report is pending and will be made available once the investigation is complete, although no further information is available, the sheriff’s office said.

Resources are available for students, staff and faculty to help them cope with grief. UCSB encourages anyone struggling with the effects of this tragedy and others to contact Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) at (805) 893-4411.
