Cherokee County man found guilty of first-degree manslaughter in 2020 crash – WSB-TV Channel 2

On November 17, 2020, Thomas reportedly drove his black 2018 Ford Mustang at excessive speeds through the Eagle Watch housing development in the Towne Lake neighborhood of Woodstock and struck 59-year-old Justiniano “Papi” Pirir-Pirir, who died on impact.

Pirir-Pirir was part of a landscaping crew working on a house on Eagle Watch Drive.

Thomas explained to officers that he could not see the truck because the sun was shining in his eyes. However, after investigation, evidence emerged that the sun was not a factor for the other drivers and that Thomas was accelerating at the time he struck and killed the victim.

The Mustang driven by Thomas was traveling at least 21 km/h above the speed limit at the time of impact, authorities say.

Further investigation revealed that Thomas was speeding through the neighborhood, tailing another driver. Several people witnessed the accident, and a security camera in a home recorded the entire incident.

Thomas was not injured but showed signs of being under the influence of alcohol or drugs. He admitted to taking a prescription drug that can cause drowsiness and blurred vision.

His sentencing is scheduled for June 27.

Pirir-Pirir was living in Acworth at the time of his death. He leaves behind a wife, children and grandchildren in Guatemala.
