Investigations are ongoing after a person was hospitalized during a Miami-Dade Fire Rescue fire training exercise

MIAMI — CBS News Miami is working on answers after a Miami-Dade fire department exercise ended in devastating fire in the middle of a busy area on Friday morning, requiring one person to be hospitalized.

The fire broke out along NW 36th Street and 66th Avenue across from Miami International Airport.

Helicopter 4 filmed the scene and showed the massive reaction.

CBS News Miami’s Morgan Rynor spoke to Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava at a campaign rally Saturday morning, and she confirmed it was a training exercise gone wrong.

“Some of our trainees also participated in this event. Unfortunately, as you know, there was a devastating fire,” she said. “One participant is in hospital. We are standing by, praying and hoping for the best.”

The use of the building for training purposes was approved, but Rynor asked the mayor if setting a fire was also permitted.

“There is a full investigation into the case right now,” Levine Cava said. “I can’t tell you anything further, but I can tell you that we are all deeply concerned and we are investigating. The state is investigating, our police department is investigating, and our internal affairs division is investigating.”

Miami-Dade Fire Rescue said one person, who was not an MDFR employee, was taken to the hospital.

“We heard that the fireman and his son were hospitalized. Can you confirm that?” Rynor asked the mayor.

“I cannot confirm the exact relationship of these individuals, but I can assure you that unfortunately the individual had to be taken to the hospital due to smoke inhalation from the fire,” Levine Cava said.

State Fire Marshal Jimmy Patronis said his investigators will also investigate. Levine Cava said the state will get involved because it was an official exercise and because it became a disaster.
