Headlines: Stonehenge drama and “Slip N Slide incident”

Headlines on local websites and newspapers in the West of England were dominated by a mix of news about the Glastonbury Festival and Stonehenge.

Earlier this week, Steven Smith, content editor at Bristol Live, reported on the Just Stop Oil activists spraying orange paint on Stonehenge.

He explained how members of the public tried to intervene in the incident near Salisbury on Wednesday – the day before the summer solstice.

The Swindon Advertiser also reported on the incident and ran an article a day later about the successful paint removal, saying that a “special hand blower” had been used to remove the orange cornmeal paint from the ancient monument.

Early Friday morning, news outlets across the West published a flood of photos from the summer solstice celebrations, where some 15,000 people gathered at Stonehenge to watch the sunrise.

However, he said this did not detract from the celebrations of those attending, who he said included people “from every single continent.”

Volunteers from the Weston Lions Club have been responsible for maintaining the clock for the past decade.
