Man shot by neighbor while rummaging under carport in east Houston

A neighborhood dispute in east Houston turned violent Friday night when a 73-year-old man shot his 80-year-old neighbor.

Police say at 8:30 p.m. on the 1500 block of Demaree Ln., an 80-year-old man was rummaging through items under his neighbor’s carport, a recurring problem that had previously ended without violence. Hearing the commotion, the 73-year-old neighbor came out and was confronted by the 80-year-old man who was brandishing a cane at him. In response, the 73-year-old shot him with a small pistol.

The two men returned home and called the police. The 80-year-old is expected to recover.

The 73-year-old is cooperating with authorities and the case will be referred to the prosecutor’s office to determine if charges will be filed.

“At this time, the 73-year-old is cooperating and being honest about everything that happened,” HPD Lt. Wilkins said. “Everything goes back to the prosecutor’s office, and they’re just working through the process to see if they’re going to file charges against anyone right now, so hopefully it doesn’t happen again.”
