At least 25 deaths, including two confirmed deaths, were reported in southwest China on Tuesday after a knife attack at a public hospital, state media said.

According to an online news portal run by public broadcaster Guizhou Radio and Television, the incident occurred at Zhenxiong People’s Hospital in Zhaotong, a city in Yunnan province.

The state outlet said a suspect was arrested following the incident. The post on Chinese social media website Weibo showed a man wearing dark pants and a white top being carried away by uniformed police officers.

China’s official Xinhua news agency had previously described the event as a “vicious attack” that claimed more than 10 lives as of 1:20 p.m. local time.

Authorities in Zhaotong acknowledged the incident, state media said, but had not issued a formal statement at the time of writing.

No motive was given for the alleged stabbing.
