PGA Travelers Championship suspends play in second round due to lightning strike

PGA Tour Fans hoping to watch the second round of the Travelers Championship in Cromwell, Connecticut, will have to wait. One of the tour’s premier events was postponed Friday afternoon due to lightning in the region, the PGA Tour announced on its Twitter page. After a lengthy delay, the tournament is scheduled to resume at 7:25 p.m. EST.

Tom Kim has built an early lead in this event, posting a score of 13 under par after shooting 62 and 65 in his first two rounds. It was his fifth round of 62 or better on the PGA Tour, with each of those scores coming in different tournaments.

Collin Morikawa, Akshay Batia, Xander Schauffele and Scottie Scheffler are not far behind. Morikawa is at 11 under par after shooting a 66 and a 63 in his first two rounds. Batia is tied with Morikawa and Scheffler at 11 under par. And Schauffele is at -10 under par after shooting two 65s in his first two rounds.

Many wondered how long it would take for Scheffler to recover from his very poor performance at the 2024 US Open (he finished T41st). The answer so far is: not long at all. Scheffler shot 65 and 64 in the first two rounds at the Travelers, putting him just two strokes behind the leader.

He’s coming off one of the most dominant seasons in PGA Tour history, and although he played very uncharacteristically at Pinehurst No. 2, that seems to be behind him. Scheffler has been incredible in 2024, scoring five wins and finishing in the top 10 12 times. Keep in mind that those numbers are from 14 events so far. And he’s also managed to finish second twice.

Collin Morikawa continues to prove that he is one of the best players in the world when he is at his best. He has been impressive in the majors this year: T3 at the Masters, T4 at the PGA Championship and T14 at the US Open.

And he has clearly stepped up his game at Travelers. He posted his lowest nine-hole score (29) on the PGA Tour in the second round of the Travelers Championship. Morikawa has six top-10 finishes in the 2024 season and is currently ranked fourth in the FedEx Cup standings. He currently ranks sixth on the PGA Tour in total strokes gained (1,275) and 11th in strokes gained tee-to-green (1,196). One of the areas where he has improved tremendously is strokes gained around the green, where he ranks 13th on Tour (0.388).
