Traffic Alert: I-5 to reopen, light rail closures this weekend

Plan for significant delays and heavy traffic this weekend in Seattle, whether you’re traveling by car or light rail.

Let’s start with the streets.

Revitalization of I-5 causes traffic jams in Seattle

Due to the Revive I-5 project, commuters between Seattle and Tukwila will have difficulty getting through this weekend.

Amy Moreno of the Washington Department of Transportation (WSDOT) said in an email that two lanes of Interstate 5 (I-5) south of Albro Place to the middle of Boeing Field will be closed to replace expansion joints.

The roadworks will begin at 10pm on Friday and will continue around the clock until 5am on Monday.

“So now we’re coming up on the last couple of weekends,” spokesman Tom Peare told KIRO Newsradio. “We’re going to replace the concrete in the area of the southbound Military Road overpass and then come back a couple more weekends to replace the expansion joints on both the southbound and northbound Military Road overpasses.”

If this is your route, expect delays of up to 20 minutes during peak hours.

The Sound Transit light rail tunnel will be closed this weekend

“Tomorrow and Sunday, the downtown (light rail) stations will be closed,” spokesman John Gallagher told KIRO Newsradio. “We will be providing shuttle service across the bridge between Capitol Hill and Sodo stations because we will be doing some track replacement work at the International District station.”

He explained that the chains were showing signs of wear sooner than expected and therefore needed to be replaced before things got worse.

Gallagher said the agency wants to complete the work before the Lynwood station opens.

“There will be a lot more passengers. And we don’t want to impact more passengers than necessary,” he said. “And we know that will cause disruption. But it’s work that we really want to get done. While we have the opportunity to do it.”

He said shuttle buses will take passengers to all light rail stops. The buses will run approximately every 15 minutes.
