Investigations into fatal U-Haul accident in Laredo underway

LAREDO, Texas (KGNS) – Authorities are investigating a fatal crash that killed 76-year-old Vicente Gaytan on June 18. Police say Gaytan was struck while trying to run a red light between a U-Haul truck and its trailer at the corner of Lyon and Frost Streets.

Investigators believe that the driver did not know that he had hit a person. Such cases are rare and the police are currently examining recordings from the day of the accident.

Local business owner Josefina Lozano raised concerns about reckless driving in the area. “He’s human. It makes you think and makes you think that we should all be careful. But there are so many vehicles that drive like they don’t have brakes. Even when they see the traffic lights, they just keep going. Drivers don’t care about the lights,” Lozano said.

The police will forward all findings to the public prosecutor, who will then decide whether charges can be brought against the driver.
