We’re tired of dangerous trends in Buffalo, New York

Many truly disturbing videos from the West New York area are going viral on platforms like Instagram and TikTok, terrifying some residents.

This is all due to a dangerous new social media trend called “Thruway Swimming,” and it has the potential to be extremely deadly.

You may have never heard of Thruway Swimming before, but chances are you’ve seen it in action on one of Buffalo’s highways and it’s freaked you out.

What is Thruway Swimming?

Crazy videos like THIS one of a speeding driver weaving into cars and lanes on 33 in Buffalo cause major alarm and fear among other drivers, especially those who frequently commute in the Western New York.

LEARN MORE: Massive police presence expected on these New York state roads

We’ve personally seen this happen nearly a dozen times over the past month while traveling to New York, and each time the incidents become more and more shocking. Drivers who do this not only put themselves and their passengers at risk, but also seriously endanger the lives of drivers around them, who are simply trying to get to work, home, school or to run errands for their family.

Can anything be done to stop these reckless drivers in Buffalo?

Police Commissioner Joseph Gramaglia said in Buffalo WGRZ-TV that the police have been instructed to stop drivers whenever they see the act happening, but we bet that’s easier said than done due to the dangerously high speeds, and prosecute the excesses speed could put many more people in danger on the road.

Unfortunately, although violating drivers could be charged, the trend shows no signs of stopping. We really hope that this scary movement on social media subsides soon, especially before the worst case scenario comes true and someone gets seriously injured or loses their life because of this.
