At least 30 dead after days of heavy rain in the Northern Triangle

Heavy rains in Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador this week have killed at least 30 people, according to authorities in these countries.

In El Salvador, 19 people were killed as a result of the storms, Civil Protection Director Luis Alonso Amaya told local media.

Among the victims are two minors who died when a landslide buried their house in the district of Soyapango, about ten kilometers from the capital San Salvador.

More than 2,500 people in El Salvador were evacuated from their homes and housed in emergency shelters.

In Guatemala, according to the National Coordinator for Disaster Risk Reduction (Conred), ten people have died as a result of the rains and more than 350 people have been evacuated and are in emergency shelters.

Guatemalan authorities reported that nearly 2,900 homes, 225 streets and 27 schools were damaged.

In Honduras, according to a report by the Permanent Committee for Emergency Situations (Copeco), one person died due to weather conditions and more than 1,200 people were evacuated.

Heavy rains are expected to continue to affect the three countries on Friday.
