State jury convicts David DePape of attacking Nancy Pelosi’s husband

The man who attacked Rep. Nancy Pelosi’s husband with a hammer during a break-in at the couple’s San Francisco home in 2022 has been found guilty by a jury in the state’s case against him, The Associated Press reported.

David DePape has already been found guilty on a federal level in connection with the break-in and assault on Paul Pelosi on October 28, 2022, and was sentenced to 30 years in prison in that case.

According to AP, the jury convicted DePape of first-degree burglary, false imprisonment, threatening a family member of a public official and aggravated kidnapping.

The San Francisco District Attorney’s Office did not immediately respond to an emailed request for comment.

Nancy Pelosi, the former Speaker of the House of Representatives, was in Washington, DC at the time of the break-in and was not injured.

Paul Pelosi testified during the federal trial that he was awakened on the day of the break-in by a “very large man” with a hammer and zip ties who asked, “Where is Nancy?”

Paul Pelosi managed to call 911 and the police when DePape wasn’t looking. Officers arrived to find DePape and Pelosi with their hands on the gavel that DePape was swinging. Officers ordered the gavel to be dropped and DePape responded by hitting Pelosi on the head.

Pelosi, then 82 years old, suffered a skull fracture.

In the state case, San Francisco Public Defender Adam Lipson told jurors in his closing argument that before the break-in and robbery, DePape had led a lonely life and had “descended down the rabbit hole of propaganda and conspiracy theories,” The Associated Press reported.

During the state trial, Lipson told the jury that DePape was guilty on three counts, but prosecutors had not presented evidence to convict him of threatening a family member of a public official and aggravated kidnapping.

DePape was found guilty of assault and attempted kidnapping in a federal trial in November and sentenced in May.
