Former Las Vegas middle school teacher charged with sexually abusing a child

A former middle school teacher has been arrested and accused of sexually abusing a child while working as a teacher.Special agents with the New Mexico Department of Justice arrested 28-year-old Leonard Romero this morning. They say he was a teacher at Memorial Middle School at the time of the crimes.Investigators say in January 2022, a school employee overheard a conversation between students. They say the students were discussing an inappropriate relationship Romero allegedly had with the victim.Las Vegas police then launched an investigation. According to investigators, the alleged victim came forward and told a Las Vegas police detective that Romero had sexually abused her.The NMDOJ took over the investigation several months later and charged Romero with five counts of criminal sexual penetration of a minor by a school employee, child solicitation via electronic communication device and enticement of minors to commit crimes.Investigators say Romero has not taught at Memorial since the allegations came to light. Romero is currently in custody at the San Miguel County Detention Center.

The NMDOJ took over the investigation several months later and charged Romero with five counts of criminal sexual penetration of a minor by a school employee, sexual battery of a minor through an electronic communication device, and inducement of a minor to commit a crime.

Investigators say Romero has not taught at Memorial School since the allegations came to light. Romero is currently being held at the San Miguel County Detention Center.
