Lagos LG suspends school feeding vendors

To prevent an outbreak of cholera, the Agege local government area in Lagos State has stopped food distribution in schools in the area.

The Council has also started rigorous awareness-raising activities to prevent the outbreak of the disease in its communities.

The Chairman of the Council, Alhaji Ganiyu Egunjobi, announced this in an interview with the Nigerian News Agency on Friday.

According to the Chairman, efforts have been made to sensitize market participants and schools through radio to prevent the outbreak in the community.

“To ensure the safety of pupils and students, we have banned all school meal vendors from working.

“We informed both the pupils and the students through the radio stations that they should bring food to protect themselves from the cholera disease.

“This development will enable us to detect and prevent outbreaks in our community,” he said.

Egunjobi added that schools were visited and inspected to ensure that children were in good health and environmental conditions.

According to him, market traders in various communities have also been educated and sensitized to ensure environmental hygiene in their places to prevent the outbreak.

“We are working tirelessly to contain the threat of a cholera outbreak in our community.

“We use various channels to talk to our population, such as through landlord associations and others, and to make them aware of the need to pay attention to hygiene when preparing food and drinks.

“We urge residents to familiarise themselves with precautionary measures against the outbreak of the deadly cholera disease.”

According to NAN, the deadly disease has now spread to over 30 states, with Lagos recording 24 deaths out of 417 cases.
