Petal community remembers three teenagers killed in car crash

PETAL, Mississippi (WHLT) – The city of Petal is devastated by the loss of three teenagers who were killed in a car accident.

Forrest County investigators said Nicholas Warren, 19, Bernard Payton, 19, and Katie Keys, 17, died in Monday’s crash, which occurred at the intersection of River Road and B&B Loop.

The three teenagers had just graduated from Petal High School on May 17. School officials said the loss was difficult for the community.

“All three had their own path through Petal High School. But all three were important parts of our school day. In the classroom, in the hallways and in the cafeteria, they simply brought a lot to the school,” said Tyler Watkins, principal of Petal High.

“It’s just heartbreaking to be here today. I’m at a loss for words. You know, these are precious students that mean a lot to our school district and our teachers and staff. And we’re just at a loss for words right now. In moments like this, the power of presence is so important. And we’re trying to surround these families with love and give them everything they need as they go through what I would describe as the hardest thing they’re going to have to go through in their lives. It’s just heartbreaking,” said Dr. Matt Dillon, Superintendent of the Petal School District.

According to investigators, two other people were seriously injured in the accident. The cause of the accident is still being investigated.

A GoFundMe campaign has been set up to support funeral and medical expenses.
