Suspect dead after shootout with officers at Galveston bar

GALVESTON, Texas — A man is dead after authorities said he was involved in a shootout with police at a Galveston bar on Wednesday.

According to Galveston Police, officers were investigating an incident in which a man reportedly illegally entered a home in Galveston’s East End on Wednesday around 3:15 p.m.

After obtaining a detailed description of the suspect, officers were able to track him to Woody’s Bar in the 11000 block of Termini-San Luis Pass Road.

When officers arrived, they determined the suspect was armed and ordered him to put his weapon down.

The suspect reportedly ignored orders to put down his weapon and an exchange of gunfire ensued between the suspect and officers. The suspect was hit by the shots and died from his injuries.

Galveston Police Chief Doug Balli said the officers involved in the shooting will be placed on modified duties pending an investigation into the incident.

The Texas Rangers and the Galveston County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigation Team were called in to investigate the shooting.
