Lizzo offers $50,0000 Sasha Be Flooting Scholarship to UH music student

Lizzo is offering a $50,000 scholarship to a University of Houston student as part of her Juneteenth Giveback campaign.

The Sasha Be Flooting Scholarship will be awarded to a music student in UH’s Kathrine G. McGovern College of the Arts. Freshman Ugo Obudulu was the first recipient in 2023. The scholarship was established and administered by the University of Houston Alumni Association Foundation and intended to cover the entire academic journey of four years of the recipient.

The scholarship is named after Lizzo’s flute, Sasha Flute, a play on Beyoncé’s alter ego Sasha Fierce. Lizzo herself attended UH on a music scholarship in the mid-2000s and played flute in the Spirit of Houston marching band.

“Music has been my sanctuary, my therapy and my voice. It has lifted me up in the most difficult times and connected me to a community that embraces diversity and individuality,” Lizzo said in a communicated. “I take great pride in helping talented Black musicians achieve their dreams at the University of Houston. I hope this will empower students around the world to pursue their passion and make a difference through music.”
