Kangaroo attacks Australian toddler in wild video

An Australian father was hailed as a hero for immediately intervening after his little daughter was attacked by a kangaroo.

The horrific incident was captured on CCTV at the family’s New South Wales home earlier this week.

The shocking clip appears to show the two-year-old playing in the grass when a giant kangaroo jumps up and pounces on her.

The little girl is thrown backwards by the marsupial using only the powerful strength of its front legs before her father rushes to help.

“Our two-year-old was attacked by a kangaroo in our garden on Saturday,” said the toddler’s mother after the traumatic incident.

“This young male lunged at her, grunting and growling as he attacked.”

“We are very grateful that she was wearing thick clothing and that her father and I were nearby, less than five meters away, and were able to stop the attack.

“In the end she tried to push it back. God bless her.”

Fortunately, the toddler was not seriously injured in the horrific attack.

The family added that they will now purchase a fence to prevent this from happening in the future.

“She suffered some minor injuries, bruises and scratches,” the mother said.

“Even if you are at a safe distance, just walk a little further. This was filmed by the security cameras in our house.”

“The smaller joey that was following behind had a mother who shot up the hill from a different camera angle and was probably disoriented and swimming with the current until she realized what was happening.”

Kangaroo attacks are very rare. The NSW Department of Environment and Heritage (DEH) reports that fewer than five people are treated for kangaroo injuries each year.

Although they are often portrayed in the media as friendly and cuddly Australian icons, the reality is that the animals can seriously harm humans.

“A kangaroo attacks a human as if it were another kangaroo,” explains the DEH in a brochure.

“It may kick or wrestle with its front paws or lean back and kick with its hind legs. Because the resulting injuries can be serious, it is crucial to avoid conflict with kangaroos.”

In 2022, a 77-year-old man died after being attacked by a pet kangaroo at his home in Redmond, Western Australia.

It was the first reported fatal kangaroo attack since 1936.
