Man who sexually assaulted two elderly Long Island women sentenced: DA

MASTIC BEACH, NY – A man was sentenced Friday to 22 years to life in prison for sexually assaulting two elderly women during home burglaries in Mastic Beach, according to Suffolk County District Attorney Ray Tierney.

Derrick Clancy, 43, whose last address is unknown, pleaded guilty in April to burglary, sexual abuse and other related charges, Tierney said.

According to the investigation and Clancy’s confessions during his guilty plea, Clancy broke into a Mastic Beach home in the early morning hours of Oct. 10, 2023, where the first woman, who was over 70 years old, was alone, the prosecutor said.

To get into the house, Clancy cut a hole in a screen door and climbed through the window. He then physically and sexually abused her, repeatedly claiming he had a knife, Tierney said.

After the abuse, the woman pressed the button on her emergency medical alert system to get help and Clancy fled the home, Tierney said. She was treated at a local hospital for her injuries, the prosecutor said.

Clancy’s second attack occurred in the early morning hours of Oct. 17, 2023, when a woman, also in her 70s, heard a noise coming from a closet in her home, Tierney said.

When the woman looked in the closet, she saw Clancy enter her home through a window in the closet. He then physically and sexually abused the woman before fleeing, Tierney said.

She immediately called 911 and was subsequently treated at a local hospital for her injuries, the prosecutor said.

Clancy was arrested on October 21, 2023, following an investigation by members of the
Suffolk County Police Department, New York/New Jersey of the United States Marshals Service
Regional Fugitive Task Force, Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office and New York State
The agency is responsible for the Department of Corrections and Probation, the district attorney said.

When he was arrested, investigators seized the mask and knife Clancy used in his first burglary, the prosecutor said.

On April 30, Clancy pleaded guilty before Acting Superior Court Judge Karen Wilutis to two counts of first-degree burglary (violent felony), two counts of first-degree sexual abuse (violent felony), two counts of second-degree assault (violent felony) and two counts of criminal obstruction of breathing or circulation (misdemeanor), the prosecutor said.

On Friday, Judge Wilutis sentenced Clancy to 22 years to life in prison, Tierney said.

He was represented by Christopher Brocato of Central Islip. Brocato was not immediately available for comment but previously said his client accepts responsibility for his crimes.

“He hopes his plea will provide some closure,” he added.

“Breaking into the homes of elderly women and sexually assaulting them is absolutely reprehensible,” Tierney said. “My office will continue to vigorously pursue justice for our most vulnerable citizens and ensure that those who exploit them face the full consequences of their actions.”
