Driver and passenger arrested after chase on east side of Jackson

JACKSON, Michigan (WILX) – Shortly after midnight Friday, two people were arrested following a police chase on Jackson’s east side.

At 12:41 a.m., officials with the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office said a deputy stopped a car on East Michigan Avenue near the city limits. Police said the deputy noticed something was wrong upon meeting the driver and asked him to step out of the car for safety. Both the driver and passenger refused.

Additional police officers were called to persuade the driver to exit the vehicle, but he continued to refuse. Then, according to police, the driver suddenly put the car in gear and attempted to drive away from the stop.

A chase began in the east side of the city when the car crashed into a tree at the corner of Page Avenue and Pringle Street.

The driver and passenger were arrested and taken to the hospital, where they were released. The scene of the chase was searched for evidence. Police said they found a magazine and a .40-caliber pistol. Police said the pistol was stolen in Detroit.

Meanwhile, according to the authorities, 25 grams of heroin were also found.

The driver was booked as a felon for fleeing and eluding, resisting obstruction of justice, and possession of ammunition. The passenger was taken to prison for obstruction of justice.

The gun and drugs are the subject of an ongoing investigation that police say will result in further charges.
