Ryan Garcia suspended and fined by NYSAC

Boxing superstar Ryan Garcia was punished by the New York State Athletic Commission after testing positive for performance-enhancing drugs.

The 25-year-old boxer agreed to a one-year suspension, a $10,000 fine and forfeiture of his $1.2 million purse from his April fight against Devin Haney. His knockout win over Haney was converted to a no-contest.

Haney will return to an undefeated record and Garcia to his 24-1 record. Garcia shared a tweet with a photo of his fight with Haney, with the caption: “F*ck You Cry Baby B*tch.”

Haney wanted to make a statement after news of Garcia’s suspension broke. On Thursday (June 20), he told ESPN: “I want to thank the commission and the fans who stood by me throughout the process. Facts are facts and I did not have an equal opportunity. I am glad I was able to get justice for what happened. This is all part of my story and will only make me better. I look forward to enjoying this time with my family and friends and seeing what comes next.”

Haney added: “I am a clean athlete and boxing is a brutal sport where one fight can literally change your life. I think it’s important for fighters to be clean and I want to advocate for clean athletes because of my experiences in this situation.”

Garcia’s positive tests included traces of Ostarine. The androgen receptor modulator, which binds to proteins in the body and tells muscles to grow, was detected in his pre- and post-fight tests.

Garcia’s team issued an official statement on Thursday declaring the boxer’s innocence regarding knowingly taking performance-enhancing supplements. The statement reads:

“Ryan and his legal team have resolved this issue and are sticking to the truth: he never intentionally took banned substances. It’s just not in his nature. … Fans will always remember his performance against Haney as a masterpiece, and that will never be erased.”

After Garcia’s suspension was announced, the NYSAC released a statement in which the commission reiterated its commitment to providing the sport and boxers with the greatest possible protection.

“The Commission will continue to demand the highest professional standards from athletes and protect the integrity of all sports under our jurisdiction,” NYSAC said.

The commission said Ryan Garcia would be reinstated on April 20, 2025, provided his urine test for banned substances was negative. They had previously agreed to accept the sentence and avoid a hearing.
