Tampa police investigate fatal hit-and-run incident after taser used

TAMPA, Florida. – Early Friday, at approximately 2:20 a.m., Tampa Police officers responded to a reported domestic violence in the 4000 block of West Hillsborough Avenue.

When he arrived, the suspect, who matched the witness description, attempted to flee the scene and resisted arrest.

During the ensuing altercation, an officer deployed a taser and the suspect was subsequently struck by a vehicle traveling east on Hillsborough Avenue.

The vehicle did not stop. Tragically, the suspect was pronounced dead at the scene.

Due to the circumstances of the incident, it has been classified as a death in custody and the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) will lead the investigation pursuant to a mutual assistance agreement.

The Tampa Police Department’s Traffic Homicide Unit is actively working to identify and locate the vehicle involved in the accident.

Additionally, an internal investigation is being conducted to ensure that the officer involved followed all department policies and procedures. In addition, the department’s victim advocate is assisting the female victim, whose injuries were fortunately not life-threatening.

Eastbound traffic on Hillsborough Avenue between Lois Avenue and N. Dale Mabry Highway remains closed pending the ongoing investigation.
