One person has died on a sparsely populated island off North Wales.

The trust that runs Bardsey off the Llŷn peninsula in Gwynedd reported a fatal incident on Wednesday.

The island of Bardsey, also known as Ynys Enlli in Welsh, has a few long-term residents and a variety of holiday accommodation.

The Bardsey Island Trust has not yet released details of the incident, but said police, coastguard, RNLI and Wales Air Ambulance were involved.

In a brief statement, the Trust said: “On 19 June a fatal incident occurred on Ynys Enlli.

“The Bardsey Island Trust extends its sincere condolences to the friends and families affected.”

The company said it was working with local residents and authorities and thanked everyone involved in dealing with the incident.

The only other detail known at this time is that the RNLI launched its inshore lifeboat Atlantic 85, based in Abersoch, at 20:25 BST on Wednesday to assist with the relief effort.

The trust said it could not comment further at this time.

In addition to holiday accommodation, it is also possible to explore the island on day trips.

According to the Trust’s website, there are 12 properties on the island, all of which are listed. One is leased to the farm, one to the Bardsey Bird & Field Observatory and one is privately rented.

The other nine properties are rented out as holiday homes by the Bardsey Island Trust.

There is no indication whether the person involved in the fatal incident lives on the island or was a visitor.

North Wales Police have not yet issued a statement on the incident.
