Ryan Garcia suspended, penalized, victory against Devin Haney annulled due to positive PED test

Ryan Garcia has been suspended for one year by the New York State Athletic Commission and will forfeit his victory over Devin Haney as part of the punishment for his positive doping tests after the victory in April, the commission confirmed to The athlete on Thursday.

Garcia must also forfeit his over $1 million in prize money to Golden Boy Promotions and was fined $10,000 by the NYSAC.

“His license to compete as a professional boxer in New York State will be suspended until April 20, 2025, until he provides the Commission with a clean urinalysis,” the NYSAC said in a statement. “The Commission will continue to hold athletes to the highest professional standards and protect the integrity of all sports under our jurisdiction.”

Shortly after news of the suspension became public, Garcia posted a picture of himself fighting with Haney on X with the caption, “F– YOU CRYING BABY B—.” The post was soon deleted.

The victory was arguably the most important of Garcia’s career and the biggest boxing upset of the year, as Haney entered the fight undefeated and the WBC super lightweight champion. Haney retained his belt because Garcia weighed 3.2 pounds over the pair’s agreed limit of 140 pounds, making him ineligible to win the title.

Haney will now also retain his undefeated record as the loss becomes a bypass.

“Thank you to the commission for doing the right thing and making the right decision,” Haney said on X after Garcia’s penalties were announced. “I don’t understand how Golden Boy is getting money, like they’re taking some hits. They haven’t even commented on this PED situation.”

Weeks after Garcia’s upset, test results showed that he tested positive for the performance-enhancing drug Ostarine the day before the win. Garcia’s pre-fight sample also reportedly tested positive for 19-norandrosterone.

On Wednesday, Garcia announced that he was “officially retired from boxing” in a series of posts on X about his struggles over the past few months. It is unclear whether Garcia knew about Thursday’s disciplinary notice when he shared his posts on Wednesday.

“Nothing that was in my body was enough for anything!!!!!!! That’s why I’m done with the game,” Garcia repeated on Thursday. “I never f***ing cheated. FUCK YOU”

On Wednesday, Garcia poked fun at a recent post from Haney that suggested a rematch after the as-yet-unannounced suspension. After it was announced on Thursday, Haney reiterated his desire for a second fight between the two.

“I’ll be back in a year,” he said. “I’ve already had all the belts. From now on, I’ll fight in the weight class of my choice and no longer in weight classes.”
