BBC Question Time special live: Sunak ‘incredibly angry’ over betting allegations as crisis deepens

Gove calls insider betting ‘reprehensible’ as second Tory candidate under investigation

Rishi Sunak has admitted he is “incredibly angry” about the betting scandal that has rocked the party’s senior campaign team.

In a special BBC Question Time programme on Thursday evening, which also featured the leaders of the Labour Party, the Liberal Democrats and the SNP, the Prime Minister faced tough questions about the uproar that has rocked his stalled election campaign.

Just two weeks before election day, a number of people with links to the Conservative Party or 10 Downing Street have been embroiled in allegations of betting on the timing of the July 4 election.

The Prime Minister said the incident had left him “incredibly angry” but declined to suspend two candidates who are currently under investigation by the Gambling Commission.

Conservative candidate Laura Saunders said earlier on Thursday that she would “cooperate with the Gambling Commission’s investigation.”

Earlier, a gambling industry source said that “more names” were being investigated in connection with alleged betting on July 4th election day – a crisis that is likely to deepen for the Tories.
