Devin Haney reacts to Ryan Garcia suspension, says he will return one year after the fight

Devin Haney responded to Ryan Garcia’s one-year suspension in a social media post on Thursday.

After Garcia’s legal team reached a settlement with NYSAC, his victory over Haney was officially declared void and he must forfeit his $1.1 million in prize money to Golden Boy Promotions (via boxing insider Dan Rafael).

While Rafael noted that Haney may earn a percentage of the purse, he doubted that Golden Boy Promotions would get “any money” back.

On April 20, Garcia secured a majority decision victory over Haney after knocking him down three times. Haney initially suffered the first loss of his professional career after entering the fight with an undefeated record of 31-0.

However, two supplements listed on the doping control forms Garcia submitted before and after his win contained the banned substance ostarine (h/t Mark Coppinger of ESPN).

“I want to thank the commission and the fans who stood by me throughout the process,” Haney said Thursday, according to Coppinger. “Facts are facts and I was not given an equal opportunity. I’m glad I was able to get justice for what happened. This is all part of my story and will only make me better. I look forward to enjoying this time with my family and friends and seeing what’s next.”

“I think it’s important for fighters to be clean and I want to advocate for clean athletes based on my experience in this situation,” he added.

According to Coppinger, Haney also sent a letter to the NYSAC on May 11 officially requesting that his loss to Garcia be changed to a win by disqualification after it was revealed that his failed test had failed. Pat English, Haney’s attorney, also argued that Garcia’s missing weight before the fight was a “tactic” that gave him an “unfair advantage.”

Garcia himself has denied allegations that he has cheated in the past. On Thursday, he continued to deny the reports, claiming in separate posts on X that he was “innocent” and that they “stole his victory.”

While Haney was pleased with the commission’s decision to suspend Garcia for at least a year, he is still not thrilled with the decision that part of the $1.1 million prize money will go back to Golden Boy Promotions.
