A spokesman for the Martin County Sheriff’s Office in Florida shared the sad news on Facebook.

According to officials, the two children managed to free themselves from the current and tried to help their parents.

Unfortunately, due to dangerous currents, they were forced to return to shore without the couple, officials said.

According to NBC affiliate WPTV in Florida, the couple’s children called 911 for help.

Martin County Ocean Rescue officers were called to the beach around 1:30 p.m. and were able to locate the couple, bring them to shore and perform CPR, the sheriff’s office said.

The sheriff’s office said life-saving measures continued in the ambulance and at the hospital before the couple was pronounced dead.
