Deputies arrest man wanted in shooting at police and school bus – WSOC TV

SHELBY, NC – A man accused of shooting at police officers and leading a chase from Lincoln County to Cleveland County has been arrested.

On Wednesday, officers from the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office spotted a car that had been reported stolen and followed it on Highway 18 in Lincoln, near Vale. It happened around 4 p.m.

According to officers, 29-year-old Jeremy Aaron Huffman began firing a handgun at them out the driver’s side window, and they returned fire. The suspect continued driving and ended up in Cleveland County.

Huffman is also accused of using his weapon to hit a school bus in Cleveland County that was carrying three children.

According to reports, no one was injured in the shooting.

Officers from the Cleveland County Sheriff’s Office began the pursuit.

Shelby Police eventually deployed stop sticks near the Walmart Distribution Center and the suspect continued driving before crashing into an embankment and chain link fence on Highway 74 near Polkville Road.

A woman in the car turned herself in to police, but authorities were still searching for Huffman after he jumped out of the car and ran away.

On Thursday morning, officials announced that Huffman had been taken into custody.

The Cleveland County Sheriff’s Office said it received a call around 7 a.m. that someone matching Huffman’s description was at a hotel on Highway 74 and allegedly wanted to go into the woods near the hotel. Officers set up a cordon around the area and spotted him running across Highway 74 toward E. Marion Street.

The sheriff’s office said Huffman was arrested after a short foot chase.

According to police, Huffman owned a 9mm pistol at the time of his arrest.

Sources told Channel 9 that he was arrested near the First Broad River Bridge, about a mile from the accident scene.

The woman in the vehicle with Huffman was identified as Jennifer Hughes.

According to the sheriff’s office, Huffman and Hughes are facing the following charges:

  • Five cases of attempted premeditated murder
  • Possession of a firearm by a felon
  • Firing a firearm into an occupied vehicle
  • Severe disability
  • Possession of a controlled substance
  • Fleeing from a crime
  • Serious crimes: resistance, delay and obstruction
  • Minor theft in two counties
  • Aggravated theft of a motor vehicle

Huffman is being held without bail on the Cleveland County charges. Hughes is being held on a total bail of more than $50,000.
