Ryan Garcia banned for one year; fight against Devin Haney declared void

Boxing star Ryan Garcia has been suspended for one year by the New York State Athletic Commission, according to ESPN’s Mike Coppinger.

The decision came Thursday after Garcia tested positive for the banned substance Ostarine, a performance-enhancing drug. In early May, there were reports that Garcia failed a drug test the day before and the day of his pay-per-view fight against Devin Haney.

Garcia defeated Haney by majority decision during their fight on April 20, 2024. It was the first loss of Haney’s career. The commission’s decision is also significant in that it reverses Garcia’s victory over Haney to a no contest, which in turn restores Haney’s undefeated record of 31-0.

In May, Garcia vehemently denied reports of a failed drug test, stating in a post on X (formerly Twitter): “Everyone knows I don’t cheat” and that he has “never taken steroids.”

In addition to his one-year suspension, Garcia must forfeit $1 million in earnings to Golden Boy Promotions and pay a $10,000 fine.

“I want to thank the commission and the fans who stood by me throughout the process,” Haney told ESPN. “Facts are facts and I was not given an equal opportunity. I’m glad I was able to get justice for what happened. This is all part of my story and will only make me better. I look forward to enjoying this time with my family and friends and seeing what’s next.”
