Kindergarten child and mother fatally hit by mini school bus in Mamaroneck

A kindergarten child and his mother were fatally hit by a mini school bus on their way to school on Thursday morning, police said.

The accident occurred around 8:30 a.m. in front of the Mamaroneck Center shopping center at the intersection of Mamaroneck Avenue and New Street, police said. The school bus remained at the scene of the accident.

Police said they received several emergency calls reporting that a child and a woman had been hit at the intersection.

According to investigators, the school bus was traveling westbound and had a green light when it struck the victims at a crosswalk where children and adults were present.

According to police, there were both adults and children on the bus, but they were not injured.

According to police, preliminary investigations revealed that it was a “tragic accident.”

The six-year-old Mamaroneck Avenue School student was pronounced dead at the scene and his 43-year-old mother was taken to the hospital for treatment, where she later died, according to police.

According to police, the 68-year-old bus driver from Mount Vernon remained at the scene of the accident and is cooperating with investigators.

Investigators say they are reviewing surveillance footage as part of their investigation.

Police said they would not release any names until Thursday afternoon.

Mamaroneck school officials issued a statement that said in part, “There is nothing worse for a community than the loss of a life, and we know that everyone in the Mamaroneck and Larchmont communities is deeply devastated by this news. We know that the death of a child is especially difficult for other children to process. At this time, we have informed our staff of this incredible loss, and social workers and psychologists are fully deployed at MAS.”

Mamaroneck Avenue was closed between Jefferson Avenue and the extension of North Barry Avenue while police investigated the scene of the accident, but has since reopened.

The school administration announced that it had put together a crisis team that would be available to students and staff all day on Friday.

Grief counseling is also available to the community throughout Friday.

School officials say they plan to open on Friday and work will be done to ensure resources are available to students and staff.
