Fatal shooting in Birmingham’s Fountain Heights neighborhood under investigation

Late Thursday morning, a man was shot dead in Birmingham’s Fountain Heights neighborhood.

Jefferson County Sheriff’s officers were in the area to possibly serve an eviction notice when they were stopped around 11:20 a.m. and informed that someone had been shot. The scene was the 1500 block of 18th Street North.

Officers responded quickly and notified Birmingham police, Officer Truman Fitzgerald said.

The victim was found unconscious on a sidewalk. The Birmingham Fire Department pronounced him dead at the scene.

According to a police radio message, the suspect fled on foot.

No arrests were made.

Fitzgerald said multiple shots were fired. The fatal shooting occurred across the street from Uptown Lofts, and investigators hope residents there saw something that could help with the investigation.

The victim is Birmingham’s 71st murder this year. Seven of these murders were judged to be justified and therefore not considered criminal.

There were 96 murders in all of Jefferson County, including 71 in Birmingham.

Anyone with information is asked to call Birmingham Police at 205-254-1764 or Crime Stoppers at 205-254-7777.
