1 dead and 1 seriously injured in accidents on I-15 in Bonsall

One person was killed and a second was seriously injured in a multi-vehicle crash involving two suspected drunk drivers in the Bonsall area late Wednesday night, the California Highway Patrol said.

The accident occurred around 11:40 p.m. on southbound Interstate 15, just south of Old Highway 395, CHP Officer Hunter Gerber said.

The chain-reaction accident began when a 26-year-old Chula Vista man driving a Chevrolet Colorado pickup truck crashed into the back of a Nissan Titan truck.

This collision left the Chevrolet on the highway, where it was struck by the driver of a Volkswagen Tigua. This car was then struck by a Toyota Camry, and a fifth vehicle, a Kia Soul, grazed the left front of the Chevrolet.

When emergency responders arrived at the scene, they found that a passenger in the Toyota Camry, a 32-year-old woman from Compton, had died in the crash. The driver of the Toyota, a 32-year-old woman from Perris, suffered life-threatening injuries and was taken to a hospital.

CHP officers arrested two drivers on suspicion of drunken driving – the driver of the Chevrolet pickup truck involved in the first crash and the 80-year-old driver of the Volkswagen.

Authorities said the investigation into the crash is ongoing and asked anyone with information to call the CHP office in Oceanside at (760) 643-3400.

The name of the deceased person was not immediately available.
