Donald Sutherland dead: Hollywood pays tribute to him

Hollywood stars took to social media on Thursday after it was announced that Donald Sutherland had died at the age of 88.

Sutherland died Thursday in Miami after a long illness, said Missy Davy of the CAA The Hollywood Reporter.

The famous actor had a brilliant six-decade career in which he played a variety of roles. His breakthrough came in the film The Dirty Dozen and Robert Altman’s MASH. During his career, the actor played in films such as Klute, Kelly’s Heroes, Don’t look now, Ordinary people, 1900, The hunger Games Series and Ad Astra.

In 2017 he received an honorary award from the Academy.

Sutherland leaves behind his wife Francine Racette, his sons Roeg, Rossif, Angus and Kiefer, his daughter Rachel and four grandchildren.

Kiefer paid tribute to his late father online, writing: “It is with a heavy heart that I have to inform you that my father, Donald Sutherland, has passed away. I personally consider him to be one of the greatest actors in film history. He was never discouraged by a role, whether it was good, bad or ugly. He loved what he did and did what he loved and you can never ask for more than that. A fulfilling life.”

Helen Mirren paid tribute to Sutherland in a statement to THR“Donald Sutherland was one of the most intelligent actors I have ever worked with. He had a wonderfully inquiring mind and a great deal of knowledge on a wide range of subjects. He combined this great intelligence with a deep sensitivity and a seriousness about his profession as an actor. All this made him the film legend he became. He was my colleague and became my friend. I will miss his presence in this world.”

Ron Howard remembered Sutherland directing in Backward draft: “I was lucky enough to direct him in #Backdraft. One of the smartest, most interesting and compelling film actors of all time. Incredible range, creative courage and dedication to serving the story and the audience with the highest excellence.”

Edgar Wright praised Sutherland’s filmography, describing him as “a popular actor with an always captivating screen presence”.

Roland Emmerich, who worked with Sutherland on Moonfall, wrote on social media: “I had the honor and great privilege to work with the incredibly talented and legendary Donald Sutherland on MOONFALL. A true screen icon of modern cinema has left us. I would like to express my deepest condolences to his family.”
