Injured boater flown out by helicopter after propeller accident in Fort Madison

A boater injured by a boat propeller was flown by helicopter to Iowa City.

The Fort Madison Fire Department reports that on Wednesday, June 19, at 6:48 p.m., the Fort Madison Fire Department was called to the Fort Madison Marina for a report of a boating accident involving one injured person.

It was reported that the injured person had been hit by the propeller of a boat. The extent of the injuries was unknown. Rescue workers requested that a rescue helicopter be sent to the scene of the accident to transport the patient.

The injured person was being transported by boat to the marina when a report came in that the boat was having engine problems and needed to go to Willow Patch Access.

The Fort Madison Fire Department dispatched our rescue boat to the Willow Patch Access while additional fire department personnel along with other emergency responders headed to the access.

Rescue workers were on the scene within minutes and the boat carrying the injured person was able to set off and reach the access. Rescue workers were able to stabilize the injured person while the Air Evac Life team helicopter was on its way to the scene.

The Air Evac Life team helicopter landed at the access and the patient was transported by helicopter to the hospital in Iowa City.

Responding to the scene were the Fort Madison Fire Department, Fort Madison Police Department, Lee County Sheriff’s Department, Lee County EMS, Air Evac Life Team and the Iowa Department of Natural Resources.

The incident is currently under investigation and the identities of those involved are not being disclosed at this time.
