According to authorities, a 41-year-old Los Angeles County Sheriff’s deputy died of a methamphetamine overdose at a sheriff’s station in April.

According to a report from the Los Angeles County Coroner, Jonathan Stewart died in an accident on April 27 from the effects of methamphetamine.

The coroner identified Stewart’s death location as a sheriff’s station. NBC Los Angeles reported on Stewart’s death in late April, saying he died while on duty at the South Los Angeles sheriff’s station.

A representative of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department was not immediately available for comment Thursday on Stewart’s death, whether there were concerns within the department before his death that he might have a drug problem, and whether and how often the department tests its employees for drugs.

Stewart’s death “deeply saddened” the sheriff’s department in a statement on April 29.

Stewart joined the department in 2006 and graduated from the academy the following year, the statement said.

“During his service, he was assigned to the Inmate Reception Center before being transferred to the South Los Angeles Station in 2014,” the Sheriff’s Department said. “In 2020, he was promoted to Field Training Officer, a position he held until his passing. Jonathan dedicated a decade to serving the South Los Angeles community and was respected and highly regarded by his peers and superiors for his unwavering commitment. Jonathan leaves behind his wife and three children.”
