According to LPD, a man was arrested in the investigation into the shooting at James Crossing Apartments

LYNCHBURG, Va. (WFXR) – Lynchburg Police said a man was arrested on felony charges following a shooting that occurred at the James Crossing Apartments on June 19.

According to LPD, officers arrived at the 800 block of Greenfield Drive around 11:47 p.m. Wednesday after receiving reports of shots fired. At the scene, a shotgun and shell casings from a handgun were found in the parking lot.

During the investigation, officers observed a man leaving the complex in a taxi cab. He matched the description given to officers by witnesses at the scene. The man was later identified as 44-year-old Mitchell Larnell Bennett Jr. of Madison Heights.

The taxi was stopped by LPD officers while still on the property of the apartment complex. A search was conducted during which Bennett allegedly lost a handgun and a shotgun shell was found near his seat in the taxi.

Investigators currently believe that Bennett Jr. was involved in an altercation that resulted in a shooting in the parking lot of the James Crossing Apartments.

Mitchell Larnell Bennett Jr. was arrested and charged with:

  • Possession of a firearm by convicted felons
  • Three cases of possession of ammunition by a convicted felon
  • Firing a firearm into an occupied building
  • Firing a firearm in the city
  • Two cases of damage to property (serious crime)

Bennett Jr. is currently being held without bail at the Lynchburg Blue Ridge Regional Jail.
