Travis Scott arrested in Florida days before 2024 tour: What we know

Rapper, singer, songwriter and hit producer Travis Scott was arrested in Miami Beach this week and charged with drunk driving.

Scott is best known for his years-long on-off relationship with Kylie Jenner, with whom he has two children, and for hosting one of the deadliest concerts in the United States during his 2021 “Astroworld” tour.

Here’s what we know about Travis Scott’s South Florida ties and his arrest.

What made Travis Scott famous?

Travis Scott, 33, real name Jacques Bermon Webster II, rose to fame after Kanye West took him under his wing in 2012 as part of a collaboration with his independent record label GOOD Music. Travis Scott had already signed a major label deal with Epic Records earlier that year and therefore worked with GOOD Music as a producer.

“After breaking out on Kanye West’s GOOD Music series, his second song, ‘Birds in the Trap Sing McKnight,’ exploded into the mainstream in 2016, topping the Billboard 200 and earning him ‘Astroworld’ two years later,” according to Billboard Music.

“The latter project spent three weeks at No. 1 and spawned one of his most well-known songs to date, ‘Sicko Mode,’ which was hard to ignore in the second half of 2018. Thanks to collaborations with Drake, Young Thug, Kid Cudi, MIA, Kodak Black and Offset, among others, Scott was able to score a handful of No. 1 singles and even more Top 10 placements.”

Where and why was Travis Scott arrested?

According to reports of Scott’s arrest and the Miami Beach Police Department’s arrest affidavit, police were called to the Miami Beach Marina early Thursday, June 20, to respond to a disturbance on a yacht. Someone called the station to report that there was a fight on the boat.

“When officers arrived, they found Scott ‘standing on the dock yelling at the vessel’s occupants.’ At first, Scott complied with police requests to sit down, but then he ignored them,” NBC’s report on the arrest affidavit said.

“The plaintiff told police he did not want to force any changes and only wanted the rapper to leave the ship. Officers could detect ‘a strong odor of alcohol on the defendant’s breath.'”

According to the report, Scott agreed to leave the boat, but did not do so quietly, approaching the boat again only about five minutes later.

“As he walked toward the boardwalk, Scott walked backwards and shouted obscenities at the boat’s occupants,” NBC’s report on the arrest said. After he left, he was seen walking back toward the boat.

“Scott spoke to a sergeant he had spoken to previously and began yelling again – ‘becoming erratic’ and ‘disturbing the peace of the residents of the marina and nearby residential buildings and causing a public disturbance,'” the affidavit states.

He was finally arrested on Thursday, June 20, at around 1:15 a.m. and later carelessly admitted to drinking alcohol, saying, “It’s Miami.”

Scott posted bail of $650 and is expected to be released.

Will Travis Scott go on tour in 2024?

This arrest came just eight days before Scott’s scheduled European tour this summer, which begins in the Netherlands.

“Travis Scott is heading overseas this summer as part of his UTOPIA – Circus Maximum Tour, visiting a number of stadiums and arenas in Europe,” Billboard reported in May.

“The 12-show tour is scheduled to kick off on June 28 with a show at the Gelredome in the Netherlands and will include shows in Poland, Switzerland, France, Belgium, the UK, the Czech Republic and Italy.”

Why does Travis Scott call himself Travis Scott?

Scott revealed how he came up with his stage name in an interview with Jimmy Fallon on “The Tonight Show” in 2018. It is a mix of his uncle’s name and Kid Cudi’s real name, Scott Mescudi.

“My uncle’s name was Travis and Kid Cudi is one of my favorite artists of all time,” Scott told Fallon.

“His real name is Scott Mescudi. And my uncle’s friends called him Scott too, so it kind of worked out. They were kind of my two superheroes, you know.”
