Jersey City charter school teacher charged with incident with student

A 67-year-old physical education teacher at a Jersey City charter school has been charged with sex crimes after authorities say he had inappropriate contact with an underage student.

Steven Gordon of Jersey City, who taught at University Academy Charter High School on West Side Avenue, was arrested Friday by the Hudson County District Attorney’s Office’s Special Victims Unit for the incident, which occurred May 29 during school hours, District Attorney Esther Suarez said.

After the investigation was completed, he resigned.

Gordon is charged with fourth-degree sexual abuse and second-degree child endangerment. He was released pending his first court date, tentatively scheduled for Friday, July 5, 2024. Following the completion of the investigation, Gordon resigned from his post.
