A 24-year-old man is accused of stabbing his father multiple times in a knife attack in Cape Cod

A 24-year-old man was arraigned in Barnstable District Court on Wednesday, accused of repeatedly stabbing his 62-year-old father outside a Centerville home on Tuesday. Court documents identified the defendant as Ygor Barboza. He was charged with armed assault and murder; Assault and assault on a person over 60; and assault and battery with a dangerous weapon on a person over 60 years of age. The judge ordered an evaluation for Barboza after his defense attorney said he suffered from mental illness. “The family struggled to get help for their youngest brother and siblings,” said defense attorney Jackie Reid. “It was difficult because, as you know, mental health care, particularly on the Cape, is poor and you have to have special qualifications.” Shortly after 9 a.m. Wednesday, Barnstable police handed the defendant over to court. A sergeant was heard repeatedly telling him: “Ygor, please get out of the vehicle. Please cooperate.” Eventually he got out, officers helped him into a wheelchair and he went to court. The violent scene occurred on Old Stage Road in Centerville around 4 p.m. Tuesday. Neighbors said they saw Barboza coming out of the house with a knife in his hand. Police arrested Barboza with guns drawn. There were evidence markers and blood on a car outside. Neighbors said police apparently used a stun gun on the suspect before arresting him and taking him away in an ambulance. “The police drew their guns and shouted, ‘Put the knife down! Put the knife down!’” And then they kept shouting, ‘Drop the knife! Drop the knife,’” said Frances Tenney of Centerville. “He didn’t drop it and the next thing we heard was a bang. We didn’t know what it really was. The boy just fell to the ground.” The police report states that a public transit bus driver saw the victim and stopped to help, treating the man’s numerous stab wounds with rolls of paper towels. The victim was flown to Rhode Island Hospital with six to 10 stab wounds to his hands, back and leg, according to a police report. The man underwent surgery and is recovering. Barboza was taken to Bridgewater State Hospital where he will undergo a 20-day evaluation.
